European Production of HYdrogen from RenewAble Energy Integration into an Industrial Environment

EPHYRA aims to enable a cost-effective, reliable renewable hydrogen economy and drive industry decarbonization in the European Union by fostering synergies in the global hydrogen market and creating a unique value proposition for industrial symbiotic hydrogen production.

EPHYRA is a Clean Energy JU Horizon Europe project with the high-level objectives to:

Design an advanced technology and integration concept for a cutting-edge AEL electrolyser.

Maximize synergies in hydrogen production, use, and valorisation streams.

Develop a digital twin and automated controls for the hydrogen plant.

Operate an integrated hydrogen production plant focused on standardization, safety, and circular economy principles.

Assess the techno-economic, environmental and societal sustainability of hydrogen production plant and local circular hydrogen economy.

Achieve social acceptance and industrial replication.

Driven by
the following innovations

1

Scaling Technology

Large-scale (5-10 MW) pressurized systems (30 bar) with next-gen electrode technology to boost performance, cost-efficiency, footprint, and dynamic response.

2

Maximizing Resource Efficiency

Leveraged co-product oxygen in refinery processes like Claus units.

Repurposed waste heat for 1 MW energy generation via an Organic Rankine Cycle machine.

Innovative non-fresh water use through desalination and lab-scale tests on reject water reuse.

3

Advanced Systems

Optimal large-scale industrial electrical grids and energy management concept.

Digital process twin for precise system modelling.

Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipes (RTP) for transport of hydrogen.
